A Message to Our Neopian Community

Regarding the Neopets Tabletop Roleplaying Game

Dear Neopians,

We want to address the conversation happening across the community about the Neopets Tabletop Roleplaying Game (TTRPG) project being developed by our licensee, Geekify Inc. We’ve been listening closely to your feedback, and we hear you.

We Share Your Standards for Neopets

Neopets have been a part of our lives for over 26 years. Neopia is something special: a place built on creativity, community, exploration, and, of course, our beloved Neopets themselves. When we agreed to license the Neopets IP for a tabletop role-playing game, we did so because we believe it could be a wonderful new way for Neopians to experience the world we all love. We shared your excitement when Geekify’s Kickstarter campaign was funded within six hours with the support of nearly 7,000 dedicated backers.

We’ve carefully reviewed the concerns raised following the release of the beta playtest document. Some of that feedback reflects deeper concerns about the project's overall direction, highlighting that we need to re-examine the quality, direction, delivery, and transparency to ensure Neopet’s essence is being protected. 

Neopets is not a generic fantasy dungeon crawler: It’s a world where you explore, play games, meet interesting characters, and go on adventures. Any tabletop adaptation should reflect that distinct identity in a meaningful and authentic way.

What We’re Doing About It

We want to be transparent with the community: the beta playtest document that was recently made public was not approved or reviewed by our team prior to its release. Under our licensing agreement, all content bearing the Neopets name must meet our quality standards and receive our written approval before it is shared publicly. Following an internal review, Neopets has determined that the content and themes contained within the document do not align with our brand standards, values, or the expectations we hold for experiences created under the Neopets license. Although the Neopets team has been steadily reviewing the TTRPG in sections as it is submitted, none of the aforementioned submissions was included in the beta document material released. We immediately requested the document’s removal and have been in direct communication with Geekify to address the matter.

Specifically, we require that all licensed content operate within the established Neopets lore built over the past 26 years, unless approved otherwise. New lore, characters, or worldbuilding elements that haven’t been part of the Neopets canon (including expanding on canonical lore) will not be permitted without our approval. We are also insisting that the game capture the full breadth of the Neopets experience: not just combat, but the exploration, magic, community, creativity, and the whimsical storytelling that makes Neopia so beloved. And while Neopets has always included moments of higher stakes and darker themes, those elements must be handled thoughtfully and appropriately with sensitivity and inclusivity at the forefront. 

We would also like to acknowledge and thank members of both the Neopets and tabletop roleplaying communities who responded thoughtfully and constructively to the beta playtest document. The feedback shared was measured, legitimate, and offered in good faith, and we recognise the care taken by many to engage respectfully despite the manner in which the material was published.

Your support for this project was a testament to how much Neopets means to you, and we don’t take that lightly. While the Kickstarter campaign was operated and run solely by Geekify, we recognise that you backed this project because of your love for Neopets, and have been waiting patiently for the products you were promised.

Regardless of how the next stages of the TTRPG develop, we will take thoughtful steps to safeguard the Neopets brand and your trust in it. We are committed to ensuring that Neopets backers are recognised and appreciated. We will share more details on this as the situation develops.

We believe there is a fantastic Neopets TTRPG waiting to be made, one that captures the magic of exploring Neopia, that gives you the freedom to adventure across all the lands you know and love, while honoring the unique qualities of the Neopets world. We are focused on taking the time needed to ensure the project reaches that potential.
