A Flash from the Past: Ruffle Resurrects Neopets Minigames
Ruffle's Flash Emulator Facilitates Return of Neopets Minigames
When Flash Player support ended on December 31, 2020, it seemed as though a giant meteorite had struck Neopia. Most of Neopets' minigames relied on Flash and became inaccessible. Countless hours of fun were gone. However, a new era dawns, and under new leadership, we are delighted to announce the triumphant return of more than 90 classic mini-games!
The Flash Player Problem
The shutdown of Adobe Flash Player at the end of 2020 posed a significant challenge for the Neopets team. The logical approach was to convert our minigames into the widely supported HTML5 format. But the transition wasn't as straightforward as flipping a switch. It entailed a complex process of unravelling intricate lines of code.
Adding to the complexity was the ticking clock. The deadline for Flash's discontinuation was fast approaching. When time ran out, many games didn't make it. Even those that did faced bugs that threatened to spoil the player experience. Unfortunately, at the time we lacked the necessary resources to redevelop all the games into HTML5.
Ruffle’s Magic
Now, with a new leadership team and additional funding, we are determined to preserve the legacy of our minigames. One such idea caught our attention after it was suggested by many players in the Neopets community: Ruffle, a Flash Player emulator.
But how exactly does Ruffle work? According to their website, "Ruffle will detect all existing Flash content on a website and automatically "polyfill" it into a Ruffle player, allowing seamless and transparent upgrading of websites that still rely on Flash content."
Simply put, it's like a translator that converts Flash content into a language that modern browsers can understand. We realised this potential and partnered with Ruffle as diamond-level sponsors in hopes of bringing back more games in the future.
“We're incredibly excited to partner with Neopets to be able to collaborate together in furthering Ruffle's capabilities and restoring an entire catalogue of games from everybody's childhood,” said Sammie McPhail, Director at Ruffle.
This move isn't just about replicating old code, it's about staying true to the essence of our minigames—we know that every quirky mechanic, character, and level design is dear to the hearts of the Neopian community. While Ruffle works great, no technology is perfect. We remain committed to improving your experience by addressing known issues encountered in some games.
